Person of the Month: Sammy J. Hartwick

Sammy Hartwick was recently sworn in as the new mayor for the City of Greenbrier. “I would like for the citizens of Greenbrier to know that myself, along with the city council, will strive to do everything possible to make our city the best it can possibly be, and be proud to call it your home town,” he said.

City: Greenbrier.

Work: Maintenance supervisor, Greenbrier Public Schools. School bus driver since 1981, in my 33rd year.

Community activities: Member of Greenbrier City Council since 1990; appointed recorder/treasurer for the city in 1996; served on the Greenbrier Chamber of Commerce board of directors. As incoming mayor, I will be an active member of the Greenbrier Chamber of Commerce board. I will also be on the board of Metro Plan (mayors and county judges from Faulkner, Pulaski, Saline and Lonoke counties).

Family: Wife of 31 years, Cheryl Garrett Hartwick, and son Rusty Joe, 28.

Education: Greenbrier High School.

Last book you read: “Front Burner” by commanding officer of the USS Cole, Kirk S. Lippold. The USS Cole ship was attacked and bombed by Al-Qaeda during a refueling stop in the Yemeni on Oct. 12, 2000. I had the privilege of hearing him speak in person in San Diego.

Favorite meal: Anything with steak.

Most cherished possession: My family and loyal friends!

Most enjoyed weekend activity: Spending time with family and friends on Greers Ferry Lake and Tannenbaum Golf Course.

No. 1 vacation: My family and I went to the Masters in Augusta, Ga., April 2014. So far, that’s the No. 1 spot!
