CBC sweeps Hendrix before conference play

CONWAY – Playing an in-town opponent for the first time in 16 years, Central Baptist College softball hosted the Warriors of Hendrix College on Tuesday at City of Colleges Park. CBC (12-14) swept the doubleheader, taking game one 4-1 before run ruling the Warriors (5-16) 17-2 in game two. CBC and Hendrix played at City of Colleges Park for the first time and also met for the first time since April of 2008, the second year of varsity softball at CBC. With the sweep, the Mustangs are now 8-2 all-time against the Warriors.

GAME ONE – CBC 4, HENDRIX 1

Hendrix got on the board first in game one, plating a run on an error in the first inning. The deficit for CBC was short lived, however, as Abi West clubbed her seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1 Mustangs. A ground out by Lauren Anderson in the third made it 3-1 and a Savannah Sanford single later in the inning brought the score to 4-1. Hannah Work got the win, throwing four innings and allowing three hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts. Olivia Pickard went one inning and allowed four hits with a strikeout, Mallory Reynolds pitched one-and-two-thirds innings, striking out two and allowing nothing else and Isabella Sawyers allowed a hit and retired the only other batter she faced.

GAME TWO – CBC 17, HENDRIX 2 (FIVE INNINGS)

CBC scored first in the second game, plating a run on a wild pitch in the first inning. Hendrix took a 2-1 lead in the second on a double, but CBC retook the lead in the bottom half, plating five in the inning thanks to an error that scored two runs and Kinley Johnson’s first three-run home run of the game and her sixth of the season to make it 6-2 after two. CBC scored three in the third thanks to doubles from Jordyn Frederic and Ysabella Esquivel and a single by Madeline Bruce on three straight at bats. The Mustangs would wrap the scoring with eight runs in fourth thanks to a two-run single by Sidney Weiser, a bases loaded walk to Esquivel, a two-run single by Bruce and Johnson’s second three-run home run of the game and her seventh of the season. Alex Jeter got win number six of the year, throwing four innings and allowing two runs on six hits with a strikeout. Gracie Keathley got the final three outs while allowing two hits in her outing.
