CBC runs winning streak of four in a row

CONWAY — Playing their final American Midwest Conference home doubleheader of the season this afternoon, Central Baptist College softball took on the Scots of Lyon College at City of Colleges Park. CBC (28-16, 14-4 AMC) swept the doubleheader from Lyon (15-21, 3-13 AMC), winning game one 11-2 before taking game two 7-2.

Katie Smith made history, stealing a base in each end of the doubleheader to give her 26 steals this season, a new single-season record. The previous record of 25 was set by Hunter Clark in 2018.

GAME ONE – CBC 11, LYON 2 (FIVE INNINGS)

The Mustangs wasted no time scoring in the first inning as an error by the Lyon shortstop gave CBC a 1-0 lead. CBC blew the game open in the second, scoring four times courtesy of an RBI double off the bat of Averie Ayers and a three-run home run by Allison Wagle, her 11th of the season. Lyon would score twice in the third to make it 5-2 before CBC added six runs in the fourth for all the runs that they needed. A run scoring on a wild pitch made it 6-2 followed by a double from Wagle, a single by Heather Hoffman, a ground-rule double by Madalyn Tubbs to make it 9-2 and a two-run single by Ysabella Esquivel to make the score 11-2. Hannah Work started and went two-and-one-third innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs with three walks and a strikeout. Alex Jeter earned the win in relief, throwing two innings and allowing one hit with a walk and two strikeouts. Olivia Pickard came on in the fifth to get the final two outs.

GAME TWO – CBC 7, LYON 2

Neither team scored in the first two innings before CBC finally broke through in the third with five runs to take a 5-0 lead. A bases-loaded walk to Maddie Thompson brought in the first run followed by an error to make it 2-0. A bunt single by Katie Smith made it 3-0 and the final two runs came home on an error. Lyon made it 5-1 in the fourth before the Mustangs added runs on back-to-back-to-back doubles by Ysabella Esquivel, Thompson and Ayers to make it 7-1 in the fourth. Lyon made it 7-2 in the fifth, but couldn’t push anymore across. Ayers threw a complete game for her 11th win, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) with four walks and a season-high 12 strikeouts.
