Warriors suffer heartbreak at the death versus UHSP

CONWAY — The Hendrix Warriors dropped their 2024 season opener to the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis (UHSP) in a 12-11 thriller on Feb. 10.

It was the women’s lacrosse program’s first ever contest played at Crafton-Faulkner Field at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium, and the Warriors wasted no time getting the party started with three quick goals within the opening two minutes scored by Kinley Robinson, Lillian Sonner, and Celina Owens-Campbell.

After closing out the first quarter with a 4-2 lead, Hendrix was outscored 5 to 1 in the second quarter to head into halftime trailing 7-5.

The two sides traded goals in the second half right down to the wire. UHSP was able to build back a two-goal lead with just over eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter, but Peyton Refling brought the Warriors back to within one with 2:25 remaining.

Just thirty seconds later, Hendrix found the equalizer via Alaina Palmer to tie the contest at 11-11.

The Warriors mounted an attack late off the ensuing draw but could not generate a chance on goal. With the match destined for overtime, there was one last flip in the script, as UHSP hit Hendrix on the counter and won a free position shot with just four seconds left on the clock. The Eutectics converted the attempt to give them the win at the death.

The loss drops Hendrix to 0-1 on the season, and they will now hit the road to take on Anderson (Ind.) and Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) this weekend.
