Person of the Month: Carolyn Pittman

City: Little Rock.

Work: Retired educator. I taught high school English and journalism in Helena and Little Rock (Robinson High School and Little Rock Central High School). I was the English Language Arts Curriculum Specialist for the Arkansas Department of Education until I retired in 2004.

Community activities: P.E.O. member; previously Little Rock Community Theatre and Helena-West Helena Community Theatre.
Church activities: Former Sunday school teacher in the Methodist church.

Family: Husband, John M. Pittman, retired from the Arkansas Court of Appeals; son Tillman of Benton (wife Amy and daughter Kiley); son Harrison of Fayetteville (wife Susan and children Earl, Anna and Jake); daughter Laura of Colorado (Bridget and children Breck, Meric and Cora); two sisters in Russellville and a brother in Texas.

Education: University of Arkansas, B.S.E.; University of Mississippi, M.A. in journalism.

Last book you read: “Hillbilly Elegy” by R.D. Vance, “Strengths Based Leadership” by Tom Rath from Gallup and “Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Favorite meal: Any meal prepared by someone else.

Most cherished possession: A worn leather wallet that my father carried, a clunker topaz ring worn by my husband’s aunt and photographs of our children and grandchildren.

Most enjoyed weekend activity: Reading, relaxing, enjoying family, watching movies with my husband and attending performances of the Rep and the Arkansas Symphony.

No. 1 vacation spot: Western United States — Grand Canyon, Badlands, Sun Valley and Sedona.

Favorite place in Arkansas: Petit Jean Mountain.

What do you love about living in the 501: The people I know from my career, neighbors and friends. I love that Little Rock is a city with the feel of a town with easy access to libraries, the arts center, theatre and music.
