'A great day for Devil Dog Basketball'

Three Morrilton Devil Dogs recently shared the spotlight, all signing to continue their basketball careers on the college level.

Classmates, school personnel, family and friends gathered in the gym at Morrilton Junior High School for the signing ceremonies.

Danielle Wright – a member of the inaugural 501 Basketball Team – signed to play for the University of New Orleans. She plans to major in physical therapy and minor in business.

A daughter of David and Christy Wright, Danielle began playing basketball in the third grade. “It’s always been my dream to play Division 1,” Danielle said. “As a little girl, I dreamed of playing at the next level.”

The Lady Devil Dog averaged 15 points per game, with four assists, three steals and three rebounds.

“Danielle knew the summer before her sophomore year that she wanted to play college basketball and she had to get better,” said Morrilton Girls Basketball Coach Carin McNabb. “We worked all summer that year on her shot and ball handling. She came off the bench that season and gave us great energy and effort. She continued to work individually after practice, at night and on weekends to become a better player.

“Her hard work has paid off and New Orleans is getting a dedicated, committed, hard worker. It is always a plus to your program when you have players sign scholarships to play at the next level.”

Danielle, an All-Conference and All-State player, also entertained offers from Lyon College and Crowder College, but she felt a bond with the New Orleans team. “I want to thank my family and coaches for everything they’ve done for me to get me where I am now.”

After Danielle’s signing, Andre’ Black signed to played at Williams Baptist, and Marcel Swinton signed with Central Baptist College.

During his turn at the microphone, Morrilton Boys Basketball Coach Keith Zackery described the event as a “great day for Devil Dog Basketball.”

The coach said he recognized a lot of potential in Andre’. “He has been a great kid to work with, and it’s been great to be a part of his life.”

A son of Carol and Anthony Black, Andre’ said he has played basketball “his whole life” but officially started in the first grade when his dad was his coach in a recreational league. He also played football and track but has focused on basketball the last few years.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Andre said of his signing. “We put in so much work, time and effort.” He expressed appreciation to his parents, coaches and others who had helped him along the way to prepare him mentally and physically for the game.

An All-Conference player, Andre’ said he is excited to be playing for Williams Baptist next season. He was also excited for his good friends Danielle and Marcel, who is also his cousin.

The Morrilton coach described Marcel, who began playing in the second grade, as a humble and great player with an “outstanding attitude.”

“He did everything I asked him to do to the best of his ability,” he said. “Central Baptist is getting a great player and student.”

Marcel, a son of Christy and Howard Swinton, was named to the 2015 edition of the 501 Basketball Team. His mother spoke at the signing ceremony. “He has had a lot of coaches behind him, making him stronger,” she said. “I want to thank all of you for being a part of his life.”

CBC Assistant Coach Andre Williams said he has big plans for Marcel. He also put Andre’ on notice – “Mr. Black, we will see you next year on the court.”
