World Day of Prayer observance Friday

The Faulkner County celebration of the World Day of Prayer will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 1, at First Presbyterian Church, 2400 Prince St. in Conway.

Organized by Church Women United, the event is free and open to the community.

The theme of this year’s celebration, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me,” was developed by the women of France out of their experience of life as women within a multicultural society. They seek to connect with people of many differing cultures, races and religions, and to open their doors for others to enter and find community. An offering accepted at the celebration will be used for grants to programs focused on migration and immigration issues.

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide ecumenical movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer and action each year on the first Friday in March. Each year a different country serves as the writer of the WDP worship service, lifting up issues of mission, justice and peace that are important to them. The 2013 WDP service will begin at the first sunrise on March 1, 2013, in the Pacific region, and following the earth’s orbit, will spread all around the world. The women who prepared this year’s worship service reach into Jesus’ identification with "the least of these" in Matthew 25, and draw on customs of hospitality found in Leviticus, to paint a picture of welcoming the stranger.

Church Women United is an ecumenical movement involving Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and other Christian women in the United States and Puerto Rico. Organized into local units, CWU works for peace and social justice from a Christian perspective while supporting dialogue with all faith groups.

The Faulkner County Unit of CWU supports local charitable agencies and organizations, hosts an annual Lenten luncheon series for the community, and holds four worship celebrations around international themes each year.
