UCA chemistry students attend national meeting

Seventeen students from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Central Arkansas represented the 501 area code during the recent American Chemical Society National Meeting in San Diego, CA.

The students had the opportunity to hear presentations by and visit with world-renowned chemists in a variety of fields, including Bassam Shakhashiri, the “Science is Fun” guy, and Roger Tsein, a co-recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Additionally, they presented original research performed in UCA laboratories under the guidance of Drs. Melissa Kelley, Donald Perry, Karen Steelman, William Taylor, and Faith Yarberry.

Finally, they enjoyed exploring the San Diego Zoo, the beaches of La Jolla, CA, the Midway Aircraft Carrier, and much, much more.

The students would like to thank the Department of Chemistry, the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, the American Chemical Society, UCA’s Student Government Association, NSF and NIH research funding, and the UCA Foundation for their support.
