UACCM to present ‘Steel Magnolias’

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton Theatre will present Robert Harling’s timeless comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in the Fine Arts Auditorium on campus. Other performances are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14, as well as a matinee show at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 15.

The cast includes Stephanie Price as Truvy, Deeanna Jones as Annelle, D.J. Reece as Clairee, Mackenzie Hendrix as Shelby, Loretta Carr as M’Lynn, and Toni Taylor as Oiuser. Jim Harris, UACCM’s Theatre & Speech instructor, will be director.

“The title of the play is a reflection of how ‘women are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel,’” Harris said. “It’s a very funny play, yet also has a ton of heart to it. The four students, one staff member and one faculty member I’ve worked with on this project have all been terrific. We’ve rehearsed four nights a week for the last six weeks for three hours at a time. I really appreciate the time and commitment everyone has put into this.”

The 1987 play follows a group of Southern women over the course of three years as they visit and gossip inside Truvy’s beauty salon in small-town Chinquapin, La. Though full of wit and lighthearted conversations among friends, the play also explores the serious nature of marriage and motherhood.
