Third annual Boati Gras a success in Fairfield Bay

by Jim Beach

The first Saturday in August marks the state’s version of Mardi Gras with festivities and pageantry combined with boats and an exceptionally beautiful mountain lake.

Considered a signature event in Fairfield Bay, Boati Gras is in its third year bigger and is more elaborate than ever, exceeding all expectations.

The Krewe of Jesters calls out for an annual day of merriment, which includes New Orleans style music, a Second Line march through the marina, elaborate costumes, Cajun food, a gathering of the Royal Court and a boat parade. Boats from all over the lake as well as Maumelle, Little Rock and Memphis joined in the free parade decked out like Mardi Gras floats.

After the “Blessing of the Fleet” by local pastor Ken Reese, the boats headed out to show off their decorative splendor. People, especially kids, lined the campground, swim area and marina to catch beads, rubber ducks and other trinkets thrown from the brightly decorated boat-floats. The parade ended after the boats passed under an arch of water from the Fairfield Bay Fire Department’s fireboat.

During the closing ceremony, trophies were awarded for best floats and best costumes and next year’s King of Jesters was announced and crowned.

This year’s king, Billy Fountain, turned over his throne to 2016 king Dan Feuer.
