The Dads who show up

As soon as Dad parked his Chevy Silverado, my brother and I bolted! He was taking us on a picnic on Hickory Hill Mountain, and we couldn’t contain our excitement about exploring and eating fried chicken. With KFC in hand, we skipped through the woods, searching for an opening for the picnic.

I consider it a perfect day, and not because of the sunny weather, the beautiful location or because the chicken was finger-lickin’ good; it was because we had all of Dad’s time and attention for a few hours. I still have vivid memories, like Polaroids that my brain saved decades ago and filed under “best day ever!”

Reflecting on those special moments with my dad, I realize they meant more than just a fun outing — they helped me appreciate the importance of being present. While I don’t know what it’s like to be a dad, I recognize they carry a different set of burdens than moms do, which I’m sure can feel overwhelming. Yet, I once heard an older man tell a young dad that so much of being a good dad is about showing up for the special moments.
