The art of lovely living

by Brenda McClain

If your summer plans are to be on Greers Ferry Lake, you might just meet Ann Robertson.

Ann blogs from her home in Searcy, where she lives with her husband, Bill. Summers for the Robertsons include heading to Greers Ferry Lake.

“The hour drive takes us higher into our own protected world with its mountain and pristine lake,” said Ann. “We meet our friends from Conway or children and grands. Boating over to Janssen’s for one of their great burgers or fine dining at the Red Apple Inn nourishes more than just our appetites. On the way home, with the smell of the lake still with us, we always question, ‘Why don’t we do this more often?’”

“The Art of Lovely Living: Authentic Beauty Living Large” is Ann’s blog, where she goes to strengthen her own “voice.”

Ann has always loved writing, admitting she writes in her head quite often. Her master’s degree is in technical and expository writing from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Her blog began six years ago, when she retired from teaching.

It was when Ann was just 8 that she wrote her first book, a technical piece titled “How to Care for Your Kitten and Cat.”

“Looking back, I’m pretty sure it was mostly plagiarized by my copying sections out of a manual with a similar title,” she said. “What did I know back then? Not much, but I was willing to learn. I had a new kitten, and out of my great love, I strived to learn how to best parent my Siamese kitten named Rama.”

“The Art of Lovely Living” has something for everyone. We love her writing and some of our favorites include “The Art of Picking Blueberries,” “Our Richly Textured Life,” “Pavlov Pegged Us,” “Each Day is a Juggling Act on the Balance Beam of Life” and “Sandwiches and Seasons.”

Her blog confirms what we all know:

“Life is easier if we know what we’re doing, and especially more adventurous when we venture into some unknowns to discover and broaden our lives and our loves. May we ever expand our hearts and minds and spirits as we circle together through The Art of Lovely Living.”

Ann leaves us with this: “a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to laugh” (Ecclesiastes 3).
