St. Joseph finishes third in Governor’s Quiz Bowl Tournament

The St. Joseph High School Quiz Bowl Team competed in the Arkansas Governor’s Quiz Bowl Association State Finals Tournament at the Magnolia Middle School in Magnolia (Columbia County) on March 13. The team finished in 3rd Place in the Class 2A Division. It’s the highest quiz bowl recognition St. Joseph has achieved to date. “The kids were awesome!” said Coach Gilbert Shade. “We missed by five points from going to the final competition in two weeks at AR PBS.”

That morning, St. Joseph won games against Haas Hall, Springdale, White County Central and Midland. At that juncture, a handful of teams had gone undefeated. Their seeding for the afternoon rounds was determined by total points accrued. That made St. Joseph the third seed. The Bulldogs then took on Conway Christian and Izard County Consolidated and defeated them both. Their lone loss was to Life Way Christian School from Centerton (Benton County). St. Joseph bounced back for the Consolation Game by beating Haas Hall of Sprindale for the second time. Life Way Christian will play Bentonville Haas Hall for the State Championship.

Senior Bryce Mallett medaled for averaging the second-highest number of correct answers per round with the figure of 11.3. His younger brother, Brody, was 10th. Bryce was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

“I can honestly say Quiz Bowl truly changed my life,” Bryce said. ” Being able to not only go to state three times, but winning 3rd Place in my senior year is a fantastic way to go out! I can’t wait to see what they will accomplish in the future and I’m so excited for them!”
