Sacred Heart holds groundbreaking

Members of Sacred Heart Church and School, as well as Morrilton Mayor Allen Lipsmeyer and employees of Nabholz Construction, recently gathered after Mass to mark the official groundbreaking for new construction projects planned on the campus.

Projects include the addition of a new school building that will provide six classrooms for K-12 students and a safe room for more than 400 people, as well as an expansion to the church.

The 10,200-square-foot school addition will be built in place of the recently demolished “convent” building, which was erected in 1950 and housed four classrooms and an office.

The church expansion will provide an approximately 2,000-square-foot addition to the church vestibule, replacement of the existing ceiling in the sanctuary, remodeling of existing bathroom/sacristy space and the addition of a covered drop-off.

Construction is slated to be completed by Christmas.

The projects are being funded by generous donors to the “Serve the Present. Honor the Past. Inspire the Future.” capital campaign; so far just under $3 million has been raised since the campaign launched in September.

Members of the Capital Campaign Committee: Misty Willbanks, Carey Ruff, Amy and Todd Hoyt, Susan Gunderman, Msgr. Jack Harris, Delores Hartman, Buddy Greeson, Brian Rohlman, Bernadette Post, Stan Willis, Brandi Cooper, Alisha Koonce, Gerry Pinter and John Maus.

“We received our parish and school as a gift from Sacred Heart families who came before us,” said Msgr. Jack Harris, pastor of Sacred Heart. “It is now our turn to add significantly to the beauty and effectiveness of this gift so that we cannot only continue to use it well, but also be prepared to hand it on to those who will follow us.”

Sacred Heart Church and School has been an important part of the Morrilton and Conway County communities for nearly 140 years; the school is one of only two remaining Pre-K – 12th grade Catholic schools in Arkansas. The people of Sacred Heart know that this is not by accident, but through the work of prayer and sacrifice made by countless families over the years.
