Riverview: Raiders hope to build on last season’s success

The Raiders returned to the playoffs in 2010 and made school history with one kick.

“Our best moment last season was winning the playoff game with Elkins,” coach Stuart Hill said. “We kicked a game-winning field goal to win our school’s first playoff game. We [then] lost to Rison . . . but I consider last year a success.”

Riverview finished 6-6 in only its third year of existence.

“We’re still a new team,” Hill said. “Winning our first playoff game was definitely a step in the right direction. Now, we want to get to where we can compete in the conference championships year in and year out.”

Defense is the team’s strong suit. Most of the defensive backs are returning from last year; Hill considers this a main strength.

Senior Tony Rowley (5-9, 165) returns at defensive back and receiver. Hill considers him a big-play threat with a lot of speed. Senior Josh Roach (5-9, 155), a veteran quarterback, will most likely be transitioning to a role as receiver after undergoing wrist surgery. Despite recovery and a changing position on the field, Hill’s expectations are high – he said he has always been impressed with Roach’s keen ability to handle the football. Junior McKenzie Jones (5-11, 170) returns at safety and running back. During the off-season, Jones developed more strength, and Hill said he is still the fastest player on the team.
