Red Curtain plans ‘Godspell Jr.’

Red Curtain Theatre will tell the stories of John the Baptist, Jesus and Judas when it presents a production of “Godspell Jr.” on Friday, April 7, through Sunday, April 9, at Staples Auditorium at Hendrix College. There will also be two special outdoor performances at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, on the lawn at The Village Green at Hendrix.

Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, “Godspell” is one of the biggest Off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time.

Based on The Gospel according to St. Matthew, the musical uses major episodes in the Bible – including the baptism of Jesus, the Last Supper, his arrest and crucifixion – to explore important ideas like compassion, love, forgiveness and sacrifice for the greater good.

The show draws on various theatrical traditions and musical styles, including pantomime, charades, acrobatics, vaudeville, folk and rock to create a groundbreaking and unique reflection on parables of Jesus.

“We are honored to be able to share this production with our community during the Easter season,” said director Kristen Sherman. “The kids involved in this show have really taken to heart the calling of being the light of the world and I can’t wait for their families, friends and the entire community to see them shine as they share Jesus’s messages of kindness, tolerance and love.”

Red Curtain Theatre is a performing arts theatre company in Conway. The mission of the organization is to provide an atmosphere that nurtures and inspires actors of all ages by offering performance opportunities through community theatre, workshops and private instruction.  “Godspell Jr.”  is directed by Sherman with music direction by Kent Britton and choreography by Olivia Stephens.

Performances are 7 p.m. April 7-8 and at 2 p.m. April 9. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. Group discounts are also available for groups of 10 or more. Tickets may be purchased at redcurtaintheatre.com or by calling 501.499.9776.

The outdoor performances will be “pay what you can.” Patrons are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and an umbrella in the event of light rain. Performances may be canceled due to inclement weather.
