Plantation Agriculture Museum to host fermentation basics workshop

SCOTT — For people living before easy access to refrigeration, knowing how to ferment foods was essential. Fermentation allows foods to be safely preserved for long periods of time while also creating new and diverse flavors.

The 1912 Steele-Dortch general store building at the Plantation Agriculture Museum, a cluster of buildings and other exhibits in Scott, Arkansas, that recall the stateís plantation and cotton-dominant culture.

Plantation Agriculture Museum is offering the opportunity to learn the basics of this traditional skill yourself at a fermentation basics workshop on Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is a $25 fee to participate. Participants at this workshop will make and sample a variety of fermented foods. Registration is required by June 7 due to limited class size.
