Museum offers glimpse at military life

The Jacksonville Museum of Military History has a little something for everyone, with artifacts dating back to the Civil War.

Its purpose is to “foster an appreciation for the men and women who served our country and to ensure that the freedoms we enjoy are not taken for granted. It is also to educate the public on the important military and home front role played by our community and the men and women of the armed services.”

The museum, which opened six years ago, is constantly growing with new artifacts and exhibits. It is located on the site of the administration building of the Jacksonville Ordnance Plant during World War II.

Many permanent and special exhibits are located in the museum’s galleries. Most displays relate to the state’s involvement during each war America was involved in. Museum director Danna Kay Dugger makes it a point to add interactive exhibits to give people a better understanding and hands-on experience with military life.

In addition, the museum has a store, media presentation and projection room and a research/library room.
