MOUNTAIN PINE: Red Devils regroup, optimistic about future

Conference: 5-2A
Coach: Jody Frazier
’12 Record: 0-10 (0-7)

Mountain Pine continued to struggle with injuries and low numbers in 2012, failing to record a victory and barely escaping the forfeiture of its season. With a clean slate and a fresh season ahead, Coach Jody Frazier and the Red Devils are optimistic about this year’s team.

“We are going to be better,” Frazier said. “We have some older players that went through a really tough time last year and really learned a lot. I expect our offense to be more balanced and have less turnovers and our defense to be more athletic.”

Senior Daniel Covey and junior Lane Buffalo battled for the quarterback spot during the offseason. Junior Deion Johnson led the team in carries and rushing touchdowns a year ago. Senior fullback Zach McGilton got stronger during the offseason and commands the Red Devil defense at linebacker. Seniors Nathan Smith and Dylan Parsons strengthen the offensive line.

Although the roster remains small this season, the team still features a lot of heart.

“Our weakness is and always will be a lack of numbers,” Frazier said. “All the kids have to play all the time. Other programs would have closed the door, but it creates a survival attitude for us and builds toughness and character.”
