Mountain Pine: Frazier optimistic with young squad

Coach Jody Frazier is no stranger to working with a young team.

Coming off a 2010 season where only four players had ever started in a high school game, the Red Devils (5-6, 5-2) turned heads late in the season, finishing third in the 5-2A conference and earning a playoff rematch against Mineral Springs.

This year, however, there are many holes to fill, especially on the offensive line and on the kicking team. Though his squad is young, Frazier remains optimistic.

"More than half of our starters could be sophomores. However, they are talented and like to compete. If we can develop some quality [quarterback] play and stay healthy, we might sneak into the playoffs."

The quarterback position is up for grabs in 2011 – candidates include sophomore Daniel Covey (5-11, 150) and junior Dylan Rainwater (5-10, 180), who has battled injuries the last two seasons.

One bright spot for the Red Devils offensively has been the running game, led by sophomore Nick Oliveira (5-8, 160). "He has a nice balance of strength and speed," Frazier said. "He rushed for over 100 yards against Mineral Springs in the playoffs as a ninth grader. He could be a really good one."
