MAUMELLE: Hornets in the mix in 4-4A

Classification: 4-4A
Coach: Mike Buchan
Last Season: 6-5 (4-3)

In their first year at the new Maumelle High, the Hornets finished 6-4 in the regular season and made the playoffs out of the 7-4A. The Hornets fell in the first round at Clinton, 56-21.

Maumelle moves to the 4-4A this fall.

The Hornets’ receiving corps is lead by two seniors — Jayln Smith (6-1, 185) and D.J. Rogers (6-1, 190). A number of seniors return on the offensive line, including all-conference guard Monty Gibbs (5-7, 260) and Hunter Bearden (6-2, 305).

Captain Corrie Webb (front, from left), co-captain Amber Ragland; Riley Rucker (middle), Moshe Hill, Kennedi Mock, Brandi Johnson, Natalie Cochran, Gabryelle Chism, Hannah Coffee; Baylie Higgins (back), Shanya Jones, Desirae Green, Sarah Pettit, McKenleigh Terry, Lauren Standley, Paige Armond and Caresse Hickman.

The jewel of the Hornets is on the defensive side of the ball — senior defensive tackle James Kelley (5-11, 300).

“James can’t be blocked one-on-one,” Coach Mike Buchan said. “He demands a double team."

Kelley — a 2012 501 Football Team honoree — benches more than 350 pounds and hang cleans more than 300 pounds.

“I expect him to be a team leader and possible all-state performer,” Buchan said.
