Makeover winners see changes inside and out

Nearly three months into their makeover, Peggy and Christina have each lost about 15 pounds, dropped a size or two and seen an increase in their energy level, thanks to the workouts at 24/7 Fitness and the help of Hurley Chiropractic.

They have also noticed a change in their skin, thanks to US Compounding and US Cosmeceuticals. “I love to get home and cleanse my face with the products, especially after I work out,” said Christina. “I’m getting comments on my skin and I love how it makes me feel more feminine.”

Thanks to Dr. Kyle Dalton and Dalton Designer Smiles, they are well on their way to beautiful and healthy smiles.

Another difference not as apparent on the outside is a change in attitude.

Christina, who is originally from Reedley, Calif., played volleyball in junior high, but wasn’t really physically active in high school.

Originally from Batesville, Peggy has lived in the 501 area for seven years. She was pretty active growing up and played basketball. A self-described “couch potato,” mealtimes were “grabbing what you could” before heading to children’s ballgames or other activities.

Peggy was like most moms with all her energy and focus on taking care of her children. It was not on taking care of herself. “You put your kids first,” Christina said in agreement, explaining that her husband works out of state which means more responsibility on her. “I was the one having to do everything.”

“We need to stop and think about what we’re doing to ourselves,” said Peggy. “I want to have more energy, feel better and look better. I’ve tended to my children and husband, it’s my turn. I want to feel like a woman. I want to wear that little black dress and high heels. I think everyone wants to feel that.”

Peggy and Christina are quick to point out that the makeover experience is not about just losing weight. “It’s not about the scales,” Christina said.

“It’s about having a healthy BMI (body mass index) and being at a weight that I’m supposed to be at,” Peggy added. “Then that little black dress will fit.”

While they were thrilled to be chosen, both were a little reluctant at the beginning with working out at the gym. “I was intimidated and sick to my stomach,” said Peggy. “I didn’t want people looking at this fat girl working out. Now, I feel like I belong there.”

Peggy was also concerned that the training might be beyond her capability. “I’m surprised by what my body can do,” she said. “Our trainer will show us something and I’m thinking ‘that’s not going to happen’ but it does and then some.”

The two work out together, offering each other help and encouragement.

Working with Dr. Amanda Bledsoe at Hurley Chiropractic, Peggy and Christina have also participated in the “Eight Weeks to Wellness” program which has helped raise their awareness about eating nutritious meals. The program includes keeping a journal of what they eat, the amount of water they drink and exercise.

With the holidays approaching, the two have already begun thinking and planning to ensure they maintain the proper diet. The plan calls for one “free” meal each week, which both plan to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day.  Even with their “free” meal, they try to make smart choices (for example, a salad instead of French fries).

Peggy and Christina are appreciative of the makeover experience and optimistic it will be life-changing.

“I’m already more conscious and aware of what I eat and exercise,” Christina said. “Now, I walk sometimes instead of driving. Our hope at the end of the six months is it will become a lifestyle.”
