GLEN ROSE: Beavers' experience unmatched in 3A

Classification: 5-3A
Coach: Mark Kehner
Last Season: 8-4 (5-2)

2011 ended in heartbreak for Glen Rose, falling to Rison in the second round of the 3A playoffs, 24-21.

“We were young, so most of our defining moments were gaining experience,” said Coach Mark Kehner. “We had a lot of big games where we would just shoot ourselves in the foot, but we learned from it and came out a better team.”

With 17 starters returning, including 10 on offense, the Beavers enter 2012 as one of the most experienced teams in 3A. All-state senior Collin Hunter (6-1, 185) returns at quarterback and free safety after a great season last year.

Senior receivers Lane Ballard (6-2, 180) and Hunter Bredensteiner (6-0, 160) have breakaway speed and are formidable weapons for Hunter. Skyler Hix (6-5, 290) provides senior leadership on the offensive line.

“We have a lot of confidence in the execution of our offense,” Kehner said. “In our defense, we still have some holes at linebacker that we have to fill. Now we have some young guys training for those spots, so we will just see how it goes.”

Filling those gaps at linebacker could be Bredensteiner and junior Kyle Petersen (5-10, 170). Strong senior Sam Brooks (6-1, 175) anchors the defensive line.

With Prescott moving to the 6-3A during the offseason, Glen Rose and Fountain Lake should battle for the 5-3A conference title.
