FOUNTAIN LAKE: Cobras strike for another 4A playoff run

Conference: 7-4A
Coach: Thomas Gilleran
’14 Record: 6-4-1 (4-3)

The Fountain Lake Cobras came out of the gate strong in 2014 and proved formidable moving up a classification into the 7-4A.

The season was a little unbalanced for Coach Thomas Gilleran’s crew, but the Cobras were able to punch a ticket to the 4A playoffs.

“We started off 4-0-1 and ended 6-4-1,” Gilleran said. “We started great, but ended slow. Beating Nashville for the first time in school history was our defining moment in 2014.”

Senior 501 Football Team honoree Parker Ross returns at running back after rushing for 1,700 yards last fall. Seniors J.T. McCoy, Austin Mayberry and Chance Wilson join Ross in the backfield of Fountain Lake’s Wing T offense. Senior Adrias Turner and juniors Hunter Bryant and Korey Wasson are battling at quarterback. Senior Sean McNeely gives the Cobras an athletic utility man who can play running back and receiver. Senior Ethan Simpson starts at tightend, and upperclassmen Austin Turner, Dusty Rhodes, Dilan Holcomb and Ethen Lingo provide senior leadership on the offensive line.

Six starters return on the defensive side. Simpson, Holcomb and senior Kevin Collins man the defensive line. Senior Leo Martinez, McCoy and Ross rotate at linebacker. McNeely, Mayberry and seniors Tyler Patton and Josh House make up the secondary.

“Offensively we will be very good,” Gilleran said. “Defensively we will get better as the year goes.”
