Feel safe in the 501? Thank a first responder

by Brenda McClain

Conway has become a sprawling example of what a Southern college town can be — community-oriented, full of life and, most importantly, safe. Much of that is owed to the first responders who make it possible for Conway to feel as safe as it does, from firefighters to policemen.

Their continued diligence and quick action have played a large role in making Conway the community it is today.

The Conway police and fire departments have similar missions; to hold a standard of excellence in their service, and exceed the expectations of duty. Their actions highlight their dedication to this commitment.

The Conway Police Department has consistently responded to crimes within the city, and has taken initiatives in preventative measures, with an emphasis on drunken driving awareness that has inspired a crackdown on this issue that can often ail college towns. The department has also recently unveiled an app (Conway Arkansas Police) that allows citizens to connect to alerts and messages from the police for increased communication between the community and those who protect it. The Conway Fire Department is just as diligent in responding to emergency situations in our city. As well as handling severe situations, they also educate the community about potentially severe weather that any Arkansan knows can be life-threatening. Their commitment takes them to incidents throughout Conway, even the tragic fire that overtook Stoby’s, an iconic spot beloved by many.

Just like the historic restaurant, the service of our first responders has become engrained in our community, and is to this day an essential part of what makes it so unique. We owe our gratitude to the men and women for their dedication to going above and beyond excellence in their service. They put themselves in harm’s way day after day to keep Conway a symbol of unity and safety.
