Editor’s Note May ’16: Faith and inspiration

As a writer, I’ve discovered for me that no matter how much time passes, there are certain stories that leave an imprint.

Many times the stories involve a major crisis or challenge, and the role faith played. It is an honor to be entrusted and have the opportunity to tell someone’s story, sharing their personal experiences, good or bad.

Nine years ago, I had the privilege of interviewing Wanda Logan and Karen Alexander about their husbands, Dr. Jack Logan and Bert Alexander, who were members of a mission team to Nicaragua. Their Bible teaching completed and the mission trip coming to an end, the two men stayed behind to enjoy some fishing. (See Page 26 in the May issue of 501 LIFE for more information.)

While on their fishing excursion with eight others, the wind picked up and the water became violent as the group traveled by boat on Lake Nicaragua. The boat became swamped and all aboard began fighting to stay alive. Jack and Bert went to the aid of two young men and became separated from the others. The four clung to an ice chest while waiting to be rescued. In the water for hours and hours, Jack and Bert held tight to their faith but decided that to give the two young men the best chance of survival they should let go. And that is what they did.

When rescue finally came, all but four of the fishing group survived. Jack and Bert did not.

Intrigued by what I heard about the men following their deaths, I approached Wanda and Karen about sharing their stories. They too, held tight to their faith, explaining how they missed the husbands they loved dearly, but drew comfort by the sacrifice they made so others could live.

Jack and Bert’s story, as well as Wanda and Karen’s strength, is so moving. The imprint that I still feel also continues to be felt in the 501 and as far away as Nicaragua. Inspired by Jack and Bert, the mission work continues in that faraway country as well as others.

What a story of faith and inspiration.
