CUTTER MORNING STAR: Eagles seek playoff berth

Conference: 5-2A
Coach: T.C. Shamel
’12 Record: 4-6

Cutter Morning Star notched four wins in its return to Class 2A last season, but a 40-30 loss to Quitman early in the season cost the Eagles the tiebreaker for the final playoff spot from the tough 5-2A conference.

Leading the way for the Eagles in 2013 is senior quarterback Spencer May, who takes over for the graduated Cody Machen.

“We are very excited about Spencer taking over,” Coach T.C. Shamel said. “Spencer gives us a lot of options as far as running and passing the ball.”

Quick senior receiver Austin Morphew is expected to be May’s biggest target.

“Austin is a playmaker,” Shamel said. “We have to get the ball in his hands as often as we can for us to be successful.”

Senior captain Sean Moore plays on both sides of the ball at center and middle linebacker. Other playmakers on defense include seniors Clark McIntyre and Zack Walters, who bench press more than 300 lbs. each.

Though the 5-2A conference appears strong and contains many talented teams, Shamel believes there’s room for Cutter Morning Star in the mix.

“Although our depth is a concern and we obviously need to avoid the injury bug, this team has a lot of seniors which brings a lot of experience,” Shamel said. We have some skilled athletes on both sides of the ball.”
