CAC: Mustangs switching to Wing T offense

Conference: 2-4A
Coach: Tommy Shoemaker
’16 Record: 8-4

After finishing third in the 2-4A last fall, the Central Arkansas Christian Mustangs are throwing out the playbook. Seriously.

“We had a good season, but were disappointed with the finish,” Coach Tommy Shoemaker said.

The new-look Mustangs are making a radical move away from the Spread offense to the Wing T. Nearly all of CAC’s offensive starters graduated, so the move to the Wing T will better suit the new starters and set them up for success.

Junior Hugh Miller takes over this season at quarterback. Sophomore Rhett James will open up holes at fullback, and senior Jason Edwards and junior Seth Crews start at the two wingback spots. Junior Garrett Overstreet splits out as a receiving threat, and senior Sam Griffey is a physical blocker at tight end. Reece Butler, Chris Rawlins, William Word, Wilson Word and Blake Fairchild will key the ground game on the offensive line.

Word, Rawlins and senior Evan Walls start up front in the Mustang 3-4 defense. Griffey, Fairchild, John Dalton and sophomore Gentry Miller lead the linebackers. Crews, Hugh Miller, Edwards and junior Krishaun Watson defend the secondary.

“We are inexperienced on both sides,” Shoemaker said. “We expect to compete for a playoff spot and be in contention for a championship. Team unity is excellent. We are inexperienced and lack size.”
