501 Football Extra: Fountain Lake Cobras

“Losing to Junction City in the first game of the year motivated us to work hard the rest of the season,” Coach Thomas Gilleran said.

Fountain Lake stormed to a 13-1 record on its way to its first state championship. Repeating won’t be easy as the Cobras lose graduated quarterback David Gray (1,579 total yards, 19 touchdowns).

Senior Mark Makin (5-9, 180) returns after an all-state season at running back. Makin rushed for more than 2,100 yards last fall, posting 34 touchdowns.

The Cobras averaged 40 points per game on offense in 2009 while only giving up 11 points per game defensively.

“The offense should carry us again this year,” Gilleran said. “Defense has a lot of holes to fill.”

5 Players to Watch: Mark Makin (Sr. RB), Dale Smith (Jr. QB), Jon Curtis (Sr. FB), Chance Meeks (Sr. TE) and Keith Santillan (Sr. OL).
