Yacht club enjoys fun on the water

According to Bill Lammers, who serves as the commodore (or president) of the club, members come from all walks of life – some are retired, some are executives and some are blue collar workers.

“The most enjoyable aspect of the club is developing friendships with a variety of people who have one thing in common – they enjoy sailing. We always encourage people who want to try sailing to join us for several events and meet the members,” said Bill.

Most members have boats on the lake, but some do not. The sailboats include relatively inexpensive boats about 20 feet long to several more expensive boats more than 40 feet long.
Bill, who taught himself how to sail by reading books and researching on the internet, said he doesn’t think it’s hard to learn how to sail. “The challenge is to learn how to sail well.”

Bill and his wife, Christina, enjoy sailing aboard their 22-foot Catalina – named “Cool Change,” which was inspired by a song by the Little River Band.

Bill, a professor, sails primarily during the weekends while classes are in session and nearly every day during the summer break. Christina describes herself as a “fair weather” sailor. “I like it but not as much as he does.”

With Bill’s leadership, the yacht club maintains a full calendar with races, cruises, themed events, dock parties, gatherings at member’s homes and meetings at local restaurants.

Lammers said the club welcomes novices, and members love to teach “newbies” to sail.
