16 Mar 2012 WRI hosts 'Tribute to 1968 MLK Memorial Service'
The event, which is free to the public, is among a series of events planned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Winthrop Rockefeller’s birth. The year-long celebration is planned to highlight the legacy of Winthrop Rockefeller in the state 40 years after he left office as the state’s 37th governor.
With a lifelong commitment to civil rights, Rockefeller was the only American governor known to hold a public memorial service after the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Gov. Mike Beebe, other living governors, many of those in attendance in 1968, along with the MLK Commission are set to help re-create that watershed moment on the steps of the Capitol.
