Work by international colorist added to Art on the Green

Art On The Green’s Nina Ruth Baker recently announced the addition of internationally-known colorist Harold Kraus to the newest gallery rotation.

“Mr. Kraus’ work is different. As a colorist, his work shows heightened color in the everyday. We have nine pieces; four pieces from his ‘Kitchen Collection,’ one of his signature pieces, ‘Stately Stems,’ and my favorite may just be ‘Turn The Radio On.’

“How many artists do we know who have a Sherwin Williams paint color named after them? ‘Kraus Hot Pink’ was introduced as part of the Sherwin Williams ‘Nashville Color Collection.’ It is right alongside Vandy Gold, Bluebird Blue and Steeplechase Green.”

Kraus has been fascinated with the various properties of color his entire life. “I’ve been painting on and off most of my life, but didn’t have any formal training until college at Lipscomb University (Nashville, Tenn.). I was actually going to be a minister and was a Bible major, art minor, but realizing that God wouldn’t likely give me an artistic skill that I shouldn’t use, I flipped my majors about halfway through college,” he said.

“It’s also important to note that I absolutely welcome commissioned art. Art on the Green knows I’m highly approachable as an artist. Just imagine the possibilities. It’s like magic."

According to Margaret Britton Vaugh, poet laureate for the state of Tennessee, “How fortunate Kraus is to know the importance of what not to paint, to know the value of the unexpected element in creative endeavor: the result is that he has become a trendsetter rather than a follower of trends in a world of contemporary art. Viewing Kraus is an experience. Owning one is an on-going joy.”

Kraus joins other internationally-known artists at Art on the Green: William McClanahan, Elizabeth Bogard, Kelly Shipp and Linda Flake.
