Vilonia market opens April 1

Vilonia Handmade & Homegrown Market will kick off its second season on Saturday, April 1. The Market will be located again at the United Methodist Church parking lot at Main and Church streets in Vilonia.

The market will be open 7 a.m. to noon every Thursday and Saturday through Oct. 14. The market now also offers an online shopping experience at Vilonia.locallygrown.net.

On April 1, SNAP will be onsite to help those in need of their services. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides benefits to low-income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities. SNAP is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net. The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) works with state agencies, nutrition educators, and neighborhood and faith-based organizations to ensure that those eligible for nutrition assistance can make informed decisions about applying for the program and can access benefits.

Beginning in May, the market will offer the Power of Produce (POP), which encourages children to engage with local farmers, try new foods and buy local produce. Fun activities, like scavenger hunts, experiments and food samples, will be offered.

The Market is a 2017 Farmers Market Publicity Grant Program Award Recipient. The market has received $400 from the Arkansas Agricultural Department, Farm Credit of Western Arkansas, AgHeritage Farm Credit Services and Farm Credit Midsouth to help with advertising. Signs will soon be on display at Vilonia’s baseball and softball fields. The market will also have new signs onsite and information brochures.
