17 Sep 2019 UCA’s Reynolds to present DIAVOLO
“DIAVOLO | Architecture in Motion” will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Reynolds Performance Hall at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.
The renowned Los Angeles-based dance company was founded in 1992 by Artistic Director Jacques Heim, who combined his academic background in theater, film and dance with a passion for architecture. For more than 25 years, his talented crew of dancers, designers and engineers have been applauded internationally for their ability to display surprising movement against a backdrop of elaborately designed spaces, all while entertaining audiences. By weaving together contemporary dance with martial arts, acrobatics, daredevil gymnastics and hip-hop, the company captivates audiences with performances that seem to defy gravity.
DIAVOLO’s newest adventure, “Voyage,” is inspired by space travel and the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Set in a surreal landscape, a young woman dreams of traveling great distances, escaping from the ordinary world into a surreal landscape of infinite possibilities. Gravity-defying bodies join her on the journey in a universe that is alive with kinetic energy, fantastical whimsy and surprising transformation.
The group is known for incorporating huge architectural structures into their performances, including a 3,000-pound, boat-like structure made of wood, aluminum and steel. It serves as the foundation for a scene in which dancers exhibit astonishing strength and balance and breathtaking acrobatics.
“With their daring acrobatics, stunning choreography and extravagant mobile structures, DIAVOLO will be a spectacular sight,” said Amanda Horton, director of Reynolds Performance Hall. “The audience should prepare to be on the edge of their seats for the entire show!”
