30 Sep 2013 UCA Public Appearances plans three events in October
Three events are planned in October for the 2013-14 UCA Public Appearances season at the University of Central Arkansas. All performances will be in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall.
Lightwire Theater (a family show) – 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.
“The Ugly Duckling” and “The Tortoise & The Hare” – planned in conjunction with Conway’s annual ArtsFest – will shine a new light on a couple of much-loved stories. Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling” has helped many young children comprehend some of the world’s common struggles; Aesop’s ancient fable “The Tortoise and the Hare” teaches the common phrase “slow and steady wins the race.”
Lightwire Theater was a semifinalist on the 2012 season of “America’s Got Talent.”
“We are really excited about this show,” said Amanda Horton, director of UCA Public Appearances. “It is very mesmerizing, and the audience will absolutely love it.”
The Lightwire Theater began in New York with two male Broadway performers, Ian Carney and Corbin Popp, and their connection of art, theater and technology. With the help of their wives, they developed a puppetry technique using EL wire, which is short for electroluminescent wire. After much practice and development, their new way of art expression began to skyrocket.
Tickets for the show, appropriate for all ages, are $10 for adults and $5 for children and students.
Paul Taylor Dance Company – 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8.
According to Horton, the Paul Taylor Dance Company is one of the most highly respected, sought-after ensembles in the dance industry. “They have amazing artistic choreography and some of the most talented performers in modern day dance,” she said.
Named after famed choreographer Paul Taylor, the original Taylor Company began in 1954 with a performance featuring five other dancers. His decades of experience, 139 dances and notoriety have led to a company that now features 16 dancers who perform worldwide.
The Paul Taylor Dance Company has toured in more than 520 cities in 62 countries, spending more than half of each performance season traveling to American cities.
The Company will host a master dance class for local advanced dancers from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at Blackbird Academy of Arts Inc., 1058 Front St., Suite 102. Those interested in participating should contact Blackbird at 501.336.8200 or [email protected].
UCA Public Appearances is sponsoring the free event at Blackbird.
“We are excited about connecting our area dancers with this educational opportunity where they will be exposed to professional artists,” Horton said. “I am thrilled to be able to engage and enrich our community with the resources of the Reynolds Performance Hall.”
Grits & Glamour: Pam Tillis & Lorrie Morgan – 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24.
