28 May 2014 UCA names seven to Hall of Fame

The University of Central Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame will add seven new members this fall when the Class of 2014 enters.

The newest inductees, who will officially join the Hall on Saturday, Oct. 11, include: Aundra Bohanon, Kenneth Davis, James Dickey, Charlie Eagle, Kevin Ervin, Danny Hazelwood and John Simmons.

Bohanon was an All-American and two-time All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference defensive back who played on conference championship teams from 1985-88.

Davis was a four-time NAIA All-American indoors and outdoors and a four-time All-AIC performer in track and field from 1986-89. He won the 400 meters and the 1,600-meter relay at the NAIA championships as a senior and still holds the school’s 400 meter record.

James Dickey had a long and storied coaching resume since graduating from UCA. He was an assistant coach at Harding, UCA, Arkansas and Kentucky, the latter two under Eddie Sutton, and coached Texas Tech to the Southwest Conference championship as head coach. Dickey was also head coach at the University of Houston through the 2013-14 season.

Eagle was a standout basketball player at Arkansas State Teachers College from 1958-61 and was a four-time All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference honoree and is in the top 15 career scorers at UCA.

Ervin was an NAIA All-American in track and field who ran on the national championship 1,600-meter relay team in 1986. He was also a two-time All-AIC selection.

Hazelwood was an outstanding track and field athlete at UCA from 1969-74, and also lettered four times in football for the Bears. He was a three-year All-AIC selection in the discus and shot put and still holds UCA school records in both events.

Simmons was a four-year letterman in football and three years in track and field from 1960-64. He was an All-AIC selection in 1961 in the 440 and 880 relays and ran on a relay team that finished third in the NAIA.

The Class of 2014, the 14th to join the UCA Sports Hall of Fame, will be inducted at a banquet at the Student Center Ballroom on Oct. 11, prior to the UCA football game against Houston Baptist at First Security Field at Estes Stadium.
