UACCM scholarship created in memory of Wade Walters

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton is now accepting applications for the Wade Walters Foundation Scholarship.

One $500 scholarship is available for the spring 2018 semester, with priority given to students from Pope County.

Walters’ family established the scholarship in his memory earlier this month for a student pursuing welding at UACCM. His family — including his mother, Susan Allen, stepfather Rusty Allen, sister Chelsy, and brother-in-law P.J. Lyles — visited campus administrators on Dec. 1 to approve the award and to tour the UACCM welding program.

Walters, a Russellville native who passed away in 2013, always enjoyed working with his hands, being outdoors, and seeing the work he had completed at the end of the day. Being a proud welder and ironworker allowed him to accomplish all three.

“Work shouldn’t be work,” Susan Allen said. “It should have purpose; it should satisfy people’s souls. Wade loved what he did, and we hope that this scholarship helps someone else find their passion. Helping other families is a priority for us, because family is what we admire most.”

Applicants for this scholarship must be enrolled part- or full-time at UACCM and pursuing a major in a college welding program. One letter of recommendation from a UACCM instructor, former employer, or former high school instructor for first-time entering freshman is required, as well as a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The application and required documents must be returned to the UACCM Financial Aid office by Monday, Jan. 8.
