16 Oct 2024 Trojans sweep MVC weekly awards
LITTLE ROCK — For the first time in program history, the Little Rock Swim and Dive Team has swept the weekly awards, with Jaelle Carlson, Anna Nishikazi and Kyra Apdaca being named MVC Swimmer, Freshman and Diver of the Week, respectively.
“As a coaching staff, we are super proud of these three individuals. They bring a tenacity and focus to each training session, so we are overjoyed that they are being recognized for their performances. We know they will continue to impress throughout the remainder of the season.” said Head Coach Nathan Townsend on the MVC awards.
“For Kyra, Houston is her home area, and she dove really well there last year at Zones. Getting to go back with teammates this time was an exciting experience. There were some talented divers at the meet, and I think that, combined with her training, really brought a great couple of performances. Looking at where she was last year at this time, I think we are exactly where we need to be.” said Diving Coach Chris Pape.
Senior Apodaca had an outstanding meet in her hometown of Houston, Texas. She delivered a strong performance on the 1 meter and achieved her highest score at UALR in the 3 meter, finishing with 263.35 points and taking 8th place. She carried this momentum into the team event helping the Trojans break the school record. She is currently placed third overall in the MVC for her 3 meter performances.Freshman Anna Nishikazi has gone from one strength to the next, showing consistent improvement at every meet. She achieved a season best in the 200 breaststroke, finishing 5th overall. This performance placed her fourth overall in the MVC so far. Building on that success, she dominated the Individual Medley events, setting a personal best in the 100. Her performance has been impressive, and it’s clear she’s just getting started as a Trojan.
Jaelle Carlson has had an amazing season so far! She was the only swimmer to win the 50 freestyle against tough teams like Rice and Houston. In addition to her individual win, she played a crucial role in every relay, helping lead the team to victory in the 400-freestyle relay. Her performance truly made a difference for the team. Carlson holds the number one seed time in the MVC for the 50 freestyle.
