Literacy Action serves about 250 students each year through its trained volunteer tutors, who gave over 7,000 hours in 2012. Tutors use nationally recognized curricula and proven methods of adult literacy instruction. With one out of every 10 adults in Central Arkansas reading at basic or below basic levels, Literacy Action provides a crucial service that benefits the entire community.
Allen, a Literacy Action student, shared, “Learning to read is like buying your first car. It is exciting and a little scary too. Being able to read makes me feel like I’m on my game. It gives me an advantage in life. It gives me power that I never felt like I had.”
The Literacy Action offices are located in the main library of the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) in Little Rock and in the Faulkner County Library in Conway. For more information, call 501.372.7323 or visit literacylittlerock.org.
