30 Oct 2010 The Hole in the Wall Cafe
Toni Burrows is the owner, operator and cook! Toni comes from a lifelong background of cooking – beginning when she had her very own ladder back chair to stand on and move from counter to counter while helping and learning from her grandmother all the aspects of “down home” southern cooking!
Toni has owned a restaurant previously, worked as a sales rep for a food distributor and definitely has a “passion to cook.” She likes to say The Hole In The Wall Cafe is “the” place to come for anyone to feel that “welcome to the home of real southern cooking!”
There are no “instant” items on the menu. Even the pie crusts are homemade, to say nothing of the nine vegetables cooked daily, Green beans, turnip greens, cabbage, great northern beans, pintos, broccoli casserole, squash casserole, asparagus casserole, mashed potatoes and fried okra are among the offerings.
Chicken fried steak and fried chicken are daily entrees, and the list continues for specials Monday through Friday with two additional meats (roast beef, chicken, pork chops, meatloaf, hamburger steak, chicken with dressing and dumplings, catfish fillets, shrimp and shrimp pasta). And if you can imagine this, Toni does, indeed, season and cook everything from scratch — including the desserts.
And did I mention to you that Toni says, “The macaroni and cheese is real — not processed cheese food?”
On the day I visited, 197 diners lined up, many of them leaving comment cards on a cork board — every one of them wrote rave reviews about the food! There is a separate dining room that can serve as over-flow seating and a private party room for 50 guests. In this room there is a floor to ceiling chalkboard where guests from “near and far” have written comments about their dining experience at The Hole In The Wall Café. It is fun to read their comments… probably the most used description is “wonderful” food!
Toni loves “putting on a big spread” — and for all the vegetable lovers — this is an oasis of southern comfort foods! For those who need the salads, there is the grilled chicken salad and the chef salad in the refrigerated cases.
The prices are reasonable, with a senior adult price of $5.50 per person. Plus, there is free coffee with dessert. Toni is always there to make certain the customer is happy! Her day began at 3 a.m. the day we visited. That’s a long day —full of passion for cooking!
