Summer Day Camp accepting elementary campers in Little Rock, Pine Bluff

LITTLE ROCK — Project Transformation Arkansas, a chapter of Project Transformation National, is a nonprofit organization partnering with local United Methodist Churches to provide a safe, nurturing, fun summer day camp experience to students in first through sixth grades. This year, Project Transformation has two campuses in Arkansas — Lakeside United Methodist Church in Pine Bluff and Oak Forest United Methodist Church in Little Rock — seeking volunteers to read with campers and provide meals for six college-aged interns.

“The adults who volunteer to read with our campers not only help them maintain their reading levels, but they also serve as mentors and safe people in the lives of these children,” said Sam Meadors, executive director of Project Transformation Arkansas. “Our campers look forward to reading to and with our adult volunteers, and they learn just how valued and loved they are in our community.”

The mission of Project Transformation is to transform communities by engaging children, college-aged young adults and churches in purposeful relationships. Each Arkansas campus will have college-age adults serving as interns who will lead the camp activities each day. Adult volunteers will register for two hours to read to or with campers. Space is still available for campers at the Little Rock campus. The cost is $20 per camper or $50 per family, and this cost may be underwritten if the family is in need. Each camper receives two meals and two snacks per day as well as reading time, crafts, recreation and more. This year, both camps are from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Thursday beginning June 10 and ending July 3

“We are seeking volunteers to help read during the week and feed our interns during the evenings,” Meadors said. “We have seven interns in each location, and they are appreciative of anything from pizza to soup and salad to chicken spaghetti. Whatever someone wants to make or provide, they will love.”
