Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

At the request of the Dr. Robert E. Elliott Foundation, Searcy Mayor David Morris and White County Judge Michael Lincoln recently signed a proclamation recognizing September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in Searcy and White County.

According to data from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, in 2010 (the most recent year for which data are available), 38,364 suicides were reported, making suicide the 10th leading cause of death for Americans.

In that year, someone in the country died by suicide every 13.7 minutes.

The Elliott Foundation is committed to build bridges of understanding about the disease of depression and suicide, through educational resources, public seminars and programs, depression screenings and community events. The foundation’s goal is to provide a lifeline of hope to those suffering from depression, eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness and encourage sufferers to seek help.
