The Fourth Annual High School AAA Sanctioned Arkansas State Wrestling Championship Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
The opening ceremony is 1 p.m. Friday.
According to tournament organizers, the level of wrestling in Arkansas continues to improve every day and has grown the last six years from two club programs to now 41 high schools and three collegiate programs.
Coaches were asked to identify the “wrestlers to watch” during the tournament. Some of the athletes making the list:
1A-5A Schools
- Sophomore Cole Brainerd of Maumelle – Weight class 113, 24-5 record.
- Senior Mark Andrews of Academic Plus Charter in Maumelle – Weight class 120, 20-1 record. He is also a returning champion.
- Sophomore Keon McVay of Maumelle – Weight class 160, record 27-9.
- Senior Chase Almond of Central Arkansas Christian – Weight class 170, record 22-3.
- Senior Bradley Gann of Beebe – Weight class 195, record 15-1.
6A-7A Schools
- Junior Tyler Kurz of Cabot – Weight class 145, record 22-1. He is also a returning champion.
- Senior O’Dell Lee of Bryant – Weight class 195, record 12-0. He is also a returning champion.
