Slow start, turnovers plague Warriors in Danville

DANVILLE, Ky. — Hendrix dug itself into a hole to start both the first and second halves in their 35-18 defeat to Centre on Oct. 19.

The Colonels scored on their first two drives and found the endzone again late in the first half to take a 21-0 lead.

With 1:07 left in the second quarter, the Warriors engineered a 75-yard drive that culminated in a Kanyn Utley touchdown reception to get the away side on the scoreboard. The ensuing extra-point attempt was unsuccessful.

Centre picked up where they left off with two touchdowns on their opening two drives to start the second half.

The Warriors tried to mount a late comeback, with Jacob Buniff finding Zylan Brown from four yards out to make it a 35-12 game. Hendrix continued to show signs of life early in the fourth quarter when Buniff found Utley for the latter’s second score of the afternoon.

Hendrix marched into the red zone with five minutes remaining, but the drive was ended with a Buniff interception to effectively end the contest. The Warriors’ gunslinger ended the afternoon with 256 yards on 27-of-41 completions with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Auvic White led all players in rushing with 101 yards on the ground on 18 attempts.

A week after a career-high 176 yards receiving, Utley put in another impressive display, racking up 128 yards on 13 receptions with 2 touchdowns.

Brooks Etheridge led Hendrix with 7 solo tackles and a tackle for loss. Nathan Hahn recorded the Warriors’ lone sack, while Chris Bell was responsible for the lone takeaway of the afternoon with his first-half interception.

Hendrix (3-4, 1-3 SAA) will remain on the road next weekend as they head to Jackson, Mississippi for a Saturday date with Millsaps. Kick-off at Harper Davis field is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
