07 Sep 2016 Senior fishing program in Maumelle
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Family and Community Fishing Program will welcome all seniors age 65 years and older to Lake Valencia in Maumelle for the largest senior citizen community fishing event in Arkansas from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 9.
The derby is free, but anglers should bring their own fishing gear. Seniors should also feel free to mingle and tell a fishing story or two. Music, food and door prizes will be provided.
The grand attendance prize will be a guided fishing trip for two on Lake Ouachita (you must be present to win).
The AGFC will hold a fishing clinic the day before the derby to get everyone primed for the big event. Instruction in fishing basics will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Sept. 8, at 550 Edgewood Drive, Suite 400 in Maumelle. Register for the fishing clinic at [email protected] or by calling 501.851.4344. No registration is needed for the derby the following day.
“I’ve done this event for the past five years, and it’s getting bigger,” said Clinton Coleman, the assistant coordinator of the Family and Community Fishing Program for the AGFC. “The reason I like this one so much is, my father and I fished together a lot. When he passed, those memories really stuck with me.
“The city [of Maumelle] lets us use the pond and the area. The senior rec center is right by the pond, so that really does help. I just urge folks to come out and enjoy some family time, take pictures and enjoy each other.”
Event sponsors include Bank of the Ozarks, Bates Field and Stream, Beef O Brady’s, Boomerang Carwash, Cheers, David’s Burgers, Fuller Lumber and Supply, Golden Corral, Hatchet Jacks, IHOP, KFC, Marco’s Pizza, Mazzio’s Pizza, Mexico Chiquito, Morgan Cafe, Nashville Rock and Grill, Pasta House, Sonic Drive-In, Subway, Taco Bueno, The Dreamy Spoon, U.S. Pizza Co. and Zaxby’s.
