Reception kicks off Rockefeller celebration

First lady Ginger and Gov. Mike Beebe recently hosted an opening reception at the Governor’s Mansion to kick off the Winthrop Rockefeller Centennial Celebration to commemo- rate the 100th anniversary of his birth.

In addition to the governor, speakers at the event included Rockefeller’s grandson, William Rockefeller, UALR Chancellor Joel Anderson and Centennial Celebration co-chairs Christy Carpenter (CEO of the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute) and Deborah Baldwin, dean of arts, humanities and social sciences at UALR.
Over the next year, the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute, the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, Winrock International, the Winthrop Rock- efeller Charitable Trust, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the Central Arkansas Library System and the Arkansas Arts Center will celebrate the 100th anniversary by reaching out from Petit Jean Mountain, the home he cre- ated in his adopted state, to the rest of Arkansas and the United States.

This Centennial Celebration will offer a variety of programs that will honor his legacy, bringing it alive to a new generation.

Among the events:

Winthrop Paul Rockefeller “270” Exhibit: 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17.

Tribute to 1968 MLK Memorial Service: 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 4.

Political Reform Conference: Wednesday, April 11, and Thursday, April 12.

UALR Center for Arkansas History and Culture: May-June.

Arkansas and Race Conference: Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12.

Arkansas Arts Center Exhibit: Friday, May 25, through Sunday, Aug. 19.

Winthrop Rockefeller Legacy Event on Philanthropy: Friday, June 1, and Saturday, June 2.
