Private Scholarships Advance Education for ASU-Beebe Students

BEEBE — Students receiving foundation scholarships at Arkansas State University-Beebe attended a Celebration of Scholars on Thursday, Nov. 14 in the Centennial Bank Gymnasium on the Beebe campus and on Friday, Nov. 15 in the Entergy Room on the Heber Springs campus.

The events provided an opportunity for the students to meet and thank their scholarship donors.

Foundation scholarships at ASU-Beebe have been privately funded throughout the years by generous donors who share a passion for the success and education of students who choose ASU-Beebe. Private funded scholarships awarded for the 2024-2025 academic year was $90,395.

Students receiving scholarships represented all the ASU-Beebe campuses located in Beebe, Heber Springs, Searcy, the Little Rock Air Force Base and online.

ASU-Beebe Development Council Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Patrick Kordsmeier from Ward, a business major and Rivers Mckee from Pangburn, a health sciences major. The ASU-Beebe Development Council is a group of community leaders and friends of the college, who combine efforts to secure private funding and increase endowments to benefit students choosing to attend ASU-Beebe. 

ASU-Beebe General Scholarship was awarded to Jordan Smith from Lonoke, an education major. This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement and dedication to personal growth, allowing students at ASU-Beebe to focus on their studies and reach their full potential.

ASUB Heber Springs General Scholarship was awarded to Skylar Nantz from Heber Springs, a health sciences major. The scholarship was established by the ASUB Heber Springs Development Council, which is a group of community leaders and friends of the college. 

Ben T. and Edith M. Eoff Family Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Caden Higginbotham from Searcy, a business major and Osvaldo Perez from Searcy, a liberal arts and sciences major. The Eoff Family Scholarship was endowed in 2006 by Cathy Eoff, owner of Eoff & Associates Realty in Beebe, and renamed as a tribute to her parents for their dedication to education.                                                          

Billy F. Powell Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Megan Richardson from Springdale, an education major. The scholarship was established by Mary Powell in 2011 in memory of her husband Billy Powell, an instructor of psychology at ASU-Beebe at the time of his death.    

Brenda Shurley Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Fabian Newborn, Jr. from Sherwood, an education major. The scholarship was endowed in 2005, and is made available by Brenda Shurley of Cabot, owner of the Shurley Method.   

Brinkley Foundation Scholarship was awarded to Isabel Clemons from Heber Springs, an liberal arts and sciences major. The Brinkley Scholarship is presented to an incoming freshman who has a high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher.          

Business and Professional Women of Heber Springs-ACF Scholarship was awarded to Bryce Walls from Quitman, a health science major. The Business and Professional Women of Heber Springs established the scholarship to be given to a resident of Cleburne County who attends ASU-Beebe Heber Springs and maintains a 3.0 grade point average or higher.  

Charles and Regina Stuart Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Abby Maxie from Tumbling Shoals, a nursing major. Charles and Regina Stuart are longtime supporters of Cleburne County and the historical society.  

Charlotte Lacy Educational Leadership Scholarship was awarded to Alexus Hernandez from Heber Springs, a liberal arts and sciences major. The scholarship is given to a Cleburne County resident majoring in education. The Charlotte Lacy Educational Leadership Scholarship pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Charlotte Lacy, a dedicated educator who left an indelible mark on the Heber Springs community.

Cleburne County Memorial Chapter 1757 UDC Scholarship was awarded Tyler Reppond from Heber Springs, a psychology major. The scholarship was established to further higher education pursuits of the recipients.  

Denver and Ruby Nettles Memorial Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Toni Simmons from Jacksonville and Faith Hunt from Cabot, both agriculture majors. The Denver and Ruby Nettles scholarship was established in memory of both Ruby and Denver E. Nettles, a former assistant professor and division chair of the agriculture department at ASU-Beebe.  

Doris Sue Whittaker Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Krista Gunder, a nursing major. The Doris Sue Waddle-Whittaker Scholarship was endowed in 2004 by the family as a memorial to the former student and nurse. The scholarship is awarded to a nursing major.

Dr. Dianne Tiner Logan Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Kiley Oliver from Rose Bud, an education major. The Dr. Dianne Tiner Logan Endowment Scholarship is given to an education major, and was established in honor of Dr. Tiner Logan, the former vice chancellor of the ASU-Beebe Heber Springs campus.  

Dr. Judy McKay Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Joshua Sledd from El Paso, a psychology major, and Laci Allender from Drasco, a business major. The scholarship was given in memory of Dr. Judy McKay, retired associate professor of English.           

Dr. Hazel C. Dickey Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Braden West from Conway, a business major. The Dr. Hazel C. Dickey Endowment Scholarship is given to a business major, and was established in honor of Dr. Hazel Dickey, retired chair of the business and agriculture departments at ASU-Beebe and advisor for Arkansas State University.    

Dr. Ruth Couch Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Carson Layes from Austin, a business major; Reagan Posey from Sherwood, an early childhood education major; Makenna Pounders from Searcy, an agriculture and animal science major; Carter Blackmon from Searcy, a biology major; Hailey Stephens from Beebe, a business major; Elisha Hartman from Greenbrier, a nursing major; Ryan Woodall from Donaldson, a veterinary technology major; Christina Justice from Heber Springs, a nursing major; Alexis Chappell from England, a criminal justice major; and Abigail Geheb from Sherwood, a health sciences major. The scholarship was established by the late Dr. Ruth L. Couch, emeritus professor of English and former vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.  

E. H. “Doc” and Ruth Abington Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Savannah Newberry from Paragould, a veterinary technology major. The E.H. “Doc” and Ruth Abington Scholarship was established in 1999 to further the education of students in the community. 

England Challenge Scholarship was awarded to Anna Dobbs from Cabot, an education major. The scholarship was endowed in 1996 by the late Walter England, emeritus associate professor of education and former ASU-Beebe Dean, to benefit students pursuing a career in teaching. 

Evelyn Ramer Stair Scholarship was awarded to Stormy Mason from Prim, a general education major. The scholarship was established by the Stair family to benefit a student who lives in Cleburne County.  

First Community Bank Scholarship was awarded to Kolby Lockard from Edgemont, an accounting major. The scholarship provides financial assistance to ASU-Beebe students who are pursuing higher education and making a positive impact in their communities.The First Community Bank Scholarship embodies the values that have defined First Community Bank since its founding in 1997: community, people and service first. 

Gerald “Jerry” Smith Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Hershall Campbell from Quitman, a liberal arts and sciences major. The scholarship was established by Arkansas State alumnus and Heber Springs resident the late Gerald “Jerry” Smith to assist students with pursuing a degree or certificate at the ASU-Beebe Heber Springs campus.  

James C. Beard Family Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Haven Smith from Searcy, a liberal arts and sciences major, and Taylor Twisdale from Cabot, a business major. The scholarship was established by the late Wilma Beard, longtime chair of the English and Fine Arts Division, in memory of her husband, James Beard.   

Jeannie Myers Lindsey Scholarship was awarded to Kaycie Seely from Hazen, a special education major. The scholarship was established by Jeannie Lindsey, a former division chair of the physical education and social science departments, who retired in 2002 after 37 years at ASU-Beebe.

Larry Sims Agriculture Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Tamera Brady from Alexander, an agriculture and animal science major. The scholarship was established by Marchia Sims, retired ASU-Beebe employee, in memory of her husband Larry Sims, who was a longtime employee of the Arkansas Plant Board.  

Leon and Virginia Shanack Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Bailey Smith from Judsonia, a pharmacy technology major. The Leon and Virginia Shanack Scholarship was established by a former ASU-Beebe employee in honor of her parents.  

Lillian and Mark Barnett Family Scholarship was awarded to Jessica Ledbetter from Quitman, a nursing major. This scholarship was established by the children of Lillian and Mark Barnett as a memorial to their parents and is available to a Heber Springs graduate.             

Marvin and Geraldine Speight Educational Scholarship was awarded to Augustus Harris from Carlisle, a liberal arts and sciences major. The Marvin and Geraldine Speight Educational Scholarship was established in 2016 by Arkansas Community Foundation in honor of longtime ASU-Beebe basketball coach and education professor Coach Marvin Speight.  

Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Shawn Frasier from Austin, a diesel mechanic major, and Shania Brown from Searcy, a health sciences major. The Memorial Scholarships were established in memory of ASU-Beebe faculty members. 

Millan Burrow Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ava Neal from Cabot, a health science major. The scholarship was named in honor of Millan Burrow, the patriarch and pharmacist, who established the family pharmacy Burrow’s Drug Store in 1966.

Resident Student Scholarship was awarded to Colton Robison from Casa, an agriculture equipment technology major. The Resident Student Scholarship is given to a student living on campus and is based on academic achievement and campus involvement.  

Robin Hayes Inspirational Achievement Scholarship in Business was awarded to Landen Stewart from Pangburn, an agriculture business major. The Robin Hayes Inspirational Achievement Scholarship is given to a business major and was established in honor of Robin Hayes, retired ASU-Beebe Director of Admissions.  

Robin Hayes Inspirational Achievement Scholarship in Health Science was awarded to Tiffany String from Beebe, a nursing major. The Robin Hayes Inspirational Achievement Scholarship is given to a health science major and was established in honor of Robin Hayes, retired ASU-Beebe Director of Admissions.  

Ronnie Eugene Davis Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Hannah Pechoski from McRae, a speech pathology major. The scholarship is provided to a student from Beebe High School, who is pursuing education at ASU-Beebe. The Ronnie Eugene Davis Memorial Scholarship was established in 2023 and pays tribute to his memory and commitment of supporting local students on their academic journey.   

R.V. Powell Memorial Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Hope Hunt from Cabot and Charla Weatherly from Cabot, both agricultural business majors. The R.V. Powell Scholarship was established in memory of R.V. Powell, a longtime local businessman and friend of ASU-Beebe.  

SGT Jason M. Swindle Veterans Legacy Scholarship was awarded to Garrett Haley from Searcy, a criminal justice major. The scholarship pays tribute to the heroism of SGT Swindle, who lost his life in the line of duty while serving in Afghanistan in 2012. The scholarship provides financial assistance and mentorship to military veterans and their families, helping them pursue higher education and transition from military to civilian life.

Spradlin Family Scholarship was awarded to Jordan Hadley from Beebe, a medical laboratory technology major. The Spradlin Family Scholarship is available to a high school graduating senior, who plans to attend ASU-Beebe and major in math and science related courses. 

Steven Storm Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Brittany Farris from Heber Springs, a nursing major. The Steve Storm Memorial Scholarship was established in 2011 in memory of Steven Storm, who was the first instructor of math and science at ASU-Beebe Heber Springs campus and served on the ASUB Heber Springs Development Council.    

Teddy Davis Educational Scholarship was awarded to Emma Cariker from Conway, a fine arts theatre major. The Teddy Davis Educational Scholarship is given to full-time students with a minimum 2.5 GPA. The scholarship was established to honor Davis’ 41 years of dedicated service to ASU-Beebe, where she was an alumna and lifelong educator, serving in numerous teaching and leadership roles.

Uncharted Magazine Writing & Art Scholarship was awarded to Bryson “Avery” McMullen from Ward, a liberal arts and sciences major. Inspired by the ASU-Beebe’s literary arts magazine “Uncharted,” the scholarship is awarded to individuals who demonstrate talent and dedication in areas such as poetry, prose, art and photography. 

Vernon H. and Mary I. Wold Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Brooklynne Lacy from Rose Bud, a business major. The scholarship provides for students attending ASU-Beebe Heber Springs campus who maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average each semester.  

Veterinary Technology Scholarship was awarded to Danielle Slater from Cherokee Village, a veterinary technology major. The Veterinary Technology Scholarship is provided by the Veterinary Technology Foundation. The veterinary technician program prepares students to assist licensed veterinarians in providing healthcare services. 

W. H. Owen Jr. Memorial Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Annie DiFlorio from El Paso, an American sign language studies major. The scholarship is available for sophomores pursuing any degree at ASU-Beebe. The W.H. Owen Jr. Memorial Endowment Scholarship was established in memory of former ASU-Beebe chancellor W. H. Owen Jr., who served from 1981 to 1994. The Owen Center was named in his honor.”
