28 Jul 2025 Philander Smith University secures reaffirmation of accreditation
Little Rock — Philander Smith University is pleased to announce that the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has reaffirmed the University’s accreditation following a comprehensive evaluation process that included a review of the University’s assurance argument, federal compliance submission and an on-site visit conducted March 17–18.
Approved by the HLC at its June 30 meeting, the 10-year extension underscores the University’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, institutional integrity, and student-centered outcomes.

“This achievement is both a validation and a victory, reflecting the diligence of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and trustees—each of whom played a critical role in preparing for this rigorous review,” remarked Dr. Maurice D. Gipson, Philander Smith University’s President and CEO. “A 10-year accreditation strengthens our position to launch bold academic initiatives, deepen student success, and expand our institutional impact. We can continue building a future rooted in excellence, equity, and innovation.”
As part of the process, Philander Smith University has also transitioned to the HLC’s Open Pathway, which supports long-term planning and continuous improvement. In alignment with this new pathway, the University has launched a Student Success initiative designed to strengthen retention, graduation, and completion rates.
With this milestone, the institution reaffirms its mission to advance educational equity and prepare scholars for lives of leadership, service, and impact—those dedicated to changing the world for the better.
