Person of the Month: Greg Dell

City: Conway.

Work: Conway Corporation.

Community activities: Renewal Ranch mentor and member of the Faulkner County Public Facilities Board.

Church activities: Second Baptist Church, Sunday school teacher and deacon.

Family: Wife, Kaye Kaye Dell; daughter, Kara, and her husband, Daniel Hollinger. I am also GranDell to one foster granddaughter right now and the other awesome kids who have come through Kara and Daniel’s home. My wife and daughter are both math teachers at Ruth Doyle Middle School in Conway, and my son-in-law is an engineer at Garver.

Last book you read: I made it through 50-plus years without ever reading “War and Peace,” and because it is so long, I decided I better not wait any longer or I might not have time to finish.

Favorite book: It is hard to beat “The Guns of August,” an incredible book about the first month of World War I, but I also love (Conway’s own) Al Hiegel’s memoir about his time in World War II. I got to sit down with Al and talk about his time on the USS Independence. By the way, my dad later served on the second aircraft carrier to bear that same name.

Favorite meal: Definitely my wife’s lasagna.

Most cherished possession: My 35-year-old wedding ring.

Most enjoyed weekend activity: It is a toss-up between turkey hunting and small mouth bass fishing.

Favorite quote: “Make the decision about your decision before you have to make the decision.” — Dick King, at a buzz group at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp at the UA when I was in the ninth grade. Jesus said the same thing in different words in Luke 4 when He said, “It is written.” In my private life and during my 32-year career at Conway Corporation, I have attempted to be prepared for the difficult decisions to come.

No. 1 vacation spot: My family tells me it is Navarre Beach, Fla., even though I would pick a creek or some woods.

Favorite place in Arkansas: Archey Fork, near Alread.

What do you love about living in the 501: My dad’s military service had us moving a lot when I was a kid, and while we were moving, we camped back and forth across the U.S. Out of all the places we went, Mom and Dad fell in love with the beauty of the 501 area, so despite not knowing a single person, they decided to settle in Conway. Who am I to disagree with my parents?
