As new head coach Ed Baker steps up to lead the Mustangs this season, they are hoping to get off to a great start.

“It’s my first year involved in the program, but we are looking forward to a season of new defining moments this year,” Baker said.

The team hopes to make these moments become a reality through the execution of their offense. As an option team, returning quarterback Lane Tubbs (5-10, 170) will direct the play of the ball.

“As one of the team leaders, we expect big things from him,” Baker said. “Defensively, we need to play good up front. If we perform well on the defensive line, it will set the tone for the rest of the game. That will be key for us.”

Junior Jess Jones (5-9, 165) and senior Corbit Williams (5-7, 135) return to lead the team on defense at linebacker and defensive back, respectively.

The fresh start continues through to Perryville’s conference outlook. The Mustangs are moving this fall to the 2-3A from the 4-3A and will have a chance to prove themselves in the new conference against the likes of Harding Academy, Barton and Bald Knob.

“It’s a tough league,” Baker said. “This season will be tough competition from top to bottom.”
